People are sending me photos of it on billboards, it’s just a different level of visibility. It’s one of those times when you think about how big the world is, how many eyes are going This photo has been around quite a bit and seen by a lot of people, but being on this album cover is such a different scale. Elton called out of the blue, to ask about using the photo and to talk about the record.
Ryan knew about my photo, and suggested it to Elton for the record. Elton already had the title for the album, so he contacted Ryan andĪsked him if he had any images that might work for it. My good friend Ryan McGinley is friends with Elton John, who is a big collector of contemporary photography and has collected a lot of Ryan’s work. Something that was so simple and real ended up so surreal and hard to believe. Mine that people always think is fake - like that it’s been Photoshopped, or shot on a green screen. I think this picture is a good example of that. Something I strive for in my photos is to imply a greater narrative, to make the viewer wonder what happened before and what happened after. When I took the picture - literally, while I was pushing the button - I was thinking, “This looks amazing.” It was just a special moment and the light was crazy that day. I’d come full circle: I was a session musician again. Working with different artists during lockdown reminded me of that. At the start of my career, in the late 60s, I worked as a session musician. And I realized there was something weirdly familiar about working like this. But all the tracks I worked on were really interesting and diverse, stuff that was completely different to anything I’m known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone into completely new territory. Some of the sessions were recorded under very stringent safety regulations: working with another artist, but separated by glass screens. Some of the recording sessions had to be done remotely, via Zoom, which I’d obviously never done before. But, as the pandemic went on, one?off projects kept cropping up. The Lockdown Sessions is a dazzlingly diverse collection of 16 tracks with 10 brand new unreleased tracks that celebrates togetherness and sees Elton collaborating with an unparalleled range of artists only he could bring together
While it was no easy feat recording during a pandemic, a completely new way of working for Elton, he took on the challenge with some impressive results. Calling it The Lockdown Sessions, this album has seen Elton come full circle and return to his roots as a session musician. This was the beginning of one of Elton's boldest and most interesting journeys in the music-making business.
